Needle and Thread - Flannel Nightie

I have wanted to join in Needle n Thread for many weeks now but just wasn't organised.
so this is my first attempt at sharing my recent sewing.

As winter approaches (actually the first day greats us in the morning here) our younger girls were in need of some new winter nightwear. Quite a few years ago, in fact when Autumn and Eden were 5 and 3 I made them winter plaid nighties, my first attempt at them.

However as it grew colder Vellvin kept saying to me 'Lets make the nighties and winter skirts for the little girls." So I sorted through my patterns and finally decided on this Simplicity 9942 that I have had in anticipation of making new nighties. I did not do the large ruffle around the bottom as it requires so much more fabric.
We had some red flannel left over from last year and so we began to cut and stitch.
While I was sewing this on for Moran and another for Myffwyn, which I am nearly finished Vellvin was making some cord winter skirts for the three younger girls.
We actually did not have enough red flannel for Vellvin and Arwen as well and so we purchased some pink with a pattern on it for them. This will be my next task to make them!
As for reading I have been reading a lot of books on my Kindle. The latest is a going back in time  Daughter of Time  (first in a series) by Sarah Woodbury. This one is going back to Wales in the thirteenth century.

This has been a real  eye opener and I recommend it for anyone who has had a child with one of these labels or even 'Developmental Delay.'
It talks about retraining the brain to overcome these issues and gives the exercises to do this at home.
From my research it is very similar if not identical to the Arrowsmith School practices which I cannot find any 'at home programme' for.

Well I will be off to check out the other great sewing and reading links at Elizabeth's blog this week. Hope to see you there.

Blessings to you and your homes,

Trahaearn's Birthday in Collage

The day had come.
Our baby has had his first birthday.

This is always a big step for me as a mama.
The baby is slowly becoming ......well, not a baby but a small child with his own little idiosyncrasies.

I just don't know what has happened to this year. Already we are well into our birthday seasons and how on earth did it get to be our little dumpling's birthday already.

Really a first birthday is for the family I think. We enjoy getting little gifts, making the baby special things (I admit Trahaearn's are still in the making stage) and planning all the special food and plans for him.
The baby just has to turn up and be cute.

I mean how hard can that be right.

Traditionally we give a 'Bunnykins' set for the first birthday as the main present. This year I was lucky enough to find three different and new patterns for Trahaearn's set. After all these years we have had 2 bowls with the same pattern on them so I was pleased  to find these new ones.

As the twelfth baby in a family really does not need many toys we got him a couple of his own books, it is never too early to buy books for a child,  a dump truck to push, cause you know all our boys have loved machinery.
What else can you get a baby but clothes and as he is number 6 in the line of boys a lot of our hand me downs have been worn to death. So new clothes for a birthday present. Of course he is too young to protest  'how boring is that'.

Birthday food:
Breakfast~ Bacon and Eggs
Lunch ~ party bags for others and porridge for Trahaearn.
Dinner ~ Great meatball and sauce recipe that Autumn made up (posting recipe soon) with soaked rice (from Nourishing Traditions)
Birthday Cake~ a turtle with broken up freckles for the shell. Oh so very simple and so very cute

I was so pleased that we were able to celebrate this special day with our special little man.

Blessings to you and your homes,

Moran's Birthday in Collage

Moran's birthday was a special one for her, as it seems for all our children and I am so thankful that they have such a specialness for each child. That for this day it is all about how much we love them and are thankful to have them in our lives.

She had been counting down for a few weeks and then due to circumstances we had to put it back a few days.
One of the most wonderful things about Moran this year is her ability to now be able to deal with this, if you give her enough time (no last minute telling) and a reason why. As little as last year this would have been to much for her to be able to deal with.

Moran wanted to have a Maypole party with dancing and picnicking around the maypole. Sadly this wasn't to be as it absolutely poured down with rain on her birthday. So we had to put up the Maypole the next day.
Needless  to say she was 'hanging out ' for this to happen but as is her nature once it was up and she had 'done the maypole thing' she very quickly lost interest.

Moran has a huge music love and has been borrowing her siblings MP3 players for a couple of years now, as well as our family I-pod. If you can't find yours - simply find Moran and ask her if she knows where it is.
So for this her 10th birthday we finally got her her own to have. Now it is up to Saxon to add all the music (she is allowed to listen too) and the audio stories we have that she can listen too as well.

It was also interesting that Moran when making her birthday list was most insistent that she did not want toys 'as they just break.' The other most important items were a crochet hook and wool as well as big girl books that she could read.

For  birthday food she wanted:
Breakfast- buckwheat pancakes with whipped cream and peaches (my favourite)
Lunch- egg and bacon grain free muffins ( this didn't happen as we reverted back to a small party bag which is generally eaten at lunch time)
Dinner - Pizza made with a gluten free base (packet mix) I was going to do a yogurt soaked base but did not start this early enough. The toppings for this were bacon, ham, salami, anchovies, prawns, pineapple, olives, dried tomato, feta cheese and mozzarella.
Birthday Cake- Sweet Shop. This has been a tradition for all our older girls so  far with Autumn, Eden and Vellvin having had it before.

All in all it was a very busy day with a very busy one to follow as Trahaearn's 1st birthday was the very next day.
Our first ever back to back birthdays! I can see this a challenge in the years to come.

Blessings to you and your homes,

Making a Maypole and how we celebrate...tutorial

May Day came and went so quickly for us and by the time I got the new ribbons for our Maypole it was pouring rain, even though we had a 5 meter high pole that Saxon had cut down for us.
So we were unable to celebrate with the usual singing and dancing around the Maypole.

So for Moran's birthday she wanted to have a Maypole and we made this one from scratch.
Here is how we made it!

Materials:
* A pole of your choice, we cut down a tree from our block, but in the past we have used a very long piece of timber, a tall tomato stake (our first maypole was this as our children were all small then) or you could use a plastic pipe of some sort.
* A hole to put the pole in and a strong lad to dig it, or a lass if you prefer.
* Ribbon to length. Our pole length was 3 meters above ground with a half meter buried . So our ribbon was meters long, they could have been longer but this was more than adequate
The colour and how many depends on personal choice. Our Maypole has 10 ribbons of various colours, but 10 because that is how many children we have at home at the moment. You can add or take off the ribbons at will.
* metal U shape fence staples Here is an image link These are to tie the ribbon they can be taken off when not in use
* hammer, shovel and perhaps a sledge hammer
* flowers to decorate the top. We used silk ones as it is Autumn season here and not many flowers in our garden.
* participants
First off lay your pole across two 'ponies' as we call them, builders saw horses to steady the pole while you work on it. You may want to dig your hole now and check you have enough depth, for safety reasons, prior to completing your Maypole.
The next thing to do is to hammer in your U shape staples around the top of the pole about 10-15 cm from the top. You can measure accurately if you like but I just 'eye-balled them in'
Take your flowers and place them in and around the U shapes, with blossom part upward, holding them steady with one or two further down the pole if needed.
You can see from this view that the flowers are amongst the U shapes and  yet still see the U shapes for tying on the ribbon.
Ribbon waiting to be tied on to the pole.
The ribbon is simply tied on with a knot that can be taken off as desired. You could add more than one colour from each U shape but we did not
All ready to be placed in the pre dug hole
I just love the way it looks with the flowers and ribbons on top.
Ready for our children to use
All about to start.
Ribbon wrapping around the pole
Children running and leaping and praising God. We really have never learned any of the complicated dances but simple skipping and running while singing this song~
Fairy Branch Song:
Here's a branch of snowy May!
A branch the Fairies gave me!
Who would like to dance today
With the branch the fairies gave me?
Dance away dance away
Holding high the branch of May!
Dance away dance away
Holding high the branch of May!

Here is a pattern to follow if you are more adventurous
I hope you have enjoyed this small tutorial on making a Maypole. Really a simple and sweet tradition to share with your own children or others as well.

Pentecost...... Happy Birthday to the Church

The Feast of Pentecost!!
Wind, fire and speech being the main theme of today.

'The Vigil of Pentecost is traditionally a day of fasting. This requirement has been done away with in the most recent Code of Canon Law, but many traditional Catholics fast anyway. The Feast itself -- a day also known as "Whitsunday" -- is considered a sort of "birthday" for the Church and marks the beginning of the week known as Whitsuntide. Vestments on Whitsunday are red, but the name "Whitsunday" comes from "White Sunday" because, at one time, those who entered the Church at Easter would once again wear their white robes today.

Pentecost is the second greatest Feast of the liturgical year -- the first being Easter -- and takes place 50 days (7 weeks) after Easter (the earliest possible date for this Feast is 10 May). This day celebrates the coming of the Holy Ghost upon the disciples and Our Lady and, in a sense, the reversal of the story of the Tower of Babel in that the the Apostles were given the gift of tongues by which they could preach and be understood by anyone in any language -- a demonstration of the Church's true catholicity.' From Fisheaters

As the month of May for us has had us hopping form one activity to another with both Moran and Trahaearn's back to back birthdays being the latest over the last few days, I was just so not ready to celebrate this most important day with much enthusiasm at all.
In fact I was exhausted by the thought of putting together another day of food and activities. If you look at our past experiences (this is a fairly typical day for us) you may see why it just wasn't on the agenda for me this year. Even the thought of some of the other activities from our plans just seemed way to much for me to imagine putting into practice.
In fact the only thing that made it for us today was BALLOONS. Yes balloons so simple and yet so capable of showing visually the wind and how the Holy Spirit could come down on those present.
The children did not even ask about the things we usually do to celebrate Pentecost and this has my thought racing with ideas and the celebration of feast days in general.
Our children, especially the little ones had the best time throwing, running after and of course popping them. Although poor little Arwen kept bursting into tears when ever hers popped on the spiky grass.
I was so thankful we had a balloon pump to blow up all the ones we played with as there were quite a lot.
It was enough to get them thinking on why this day was so important and Myffy was  the one who put it so succinctly when I asked her what today was......by saying 'It is the Spirit day'. I think she gets it, which is part of the point of these celebrations in our home.
However Myffwyn was so keen on the idea of the balloons she made a 'kite' as she called it out of the balloons. She spent ages blowing them up the hard way- by mouth- and then tied them all together on  strings to be flown along after her as she ran along.
Of course it did not take her long to work out it could be just as fun to tie them to her bike and ride along with them too.
Some symbolism of this day~ doves, the liturgical color red representing the Holy Ghost, the color white representing the white robes of the Catechumens, red Columbineand/or white flowers, lots of greenery to symbolize life (the color green represents hope and life and, in Eastern Churches, the Holy Ghost), fire, the number three representing the Theological Virtues given to us by the Holy Ghost, the number seven representing the Gifts of the Holy Ghost, the number 12 representing the Fruits of the Holy Ghost, etc., -- all of these symbols could be incorporated into the day. The columbine flower (see right) has been used to decorate on Pentecost and its octave. The petals of the flowers are dove-shaped, whence comes its name -- after "columba," the Latin word for "dove."

In medieval times, families in many parts of Europe would suspend a carved and painted wooden dove over their dining table. Such a custom could be easily revived for the throughout the Octave of the Pentecost -- and imagine that dining room table covered with a white tablecloth, sprinkled with red rose petals, and with a vase of columbine at its center.

This beautiful Hymn is so full of the symbolism of today~
 Come, Holy Spirit, come

Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from Thy celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine!

Come Father of the poor!
Come source of all our store!
Come within our bosoms shine!

Thou, of comforters the best;
Thou, the soul's most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below;

In our labor, rest most sweet;
Grateful coolness in the heat,
Solace in the midst of woe.

O most blessed Light divine
Shine within these hearts of Thine.
And our inmost being fill!

Where you are not, man has naught,
Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour Thy dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.

On the faithful who adore
And confess you, evermore
In your sev'nfold gift descend;

Give them virtue's sure reward;
Give them Thy salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end.
Amen. Alleluia

The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit~
Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, Fear of the Lord

The Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit~
Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Modesty, Self Control and Chastity.

May the beauty and grace of the Holy Spirit fill you today and always!

Happy 1st Birthday Trahaearn ♥

A year ago we were so anxiously awaiting your arrival.
How we were excited about the day of your birth.
We had been ready for some time and yet still it was two weeks after your due date before you were in our arms.
The wait was worth it though.
Since your arrival you have been a complete gift to treasure.

The smiles you give to us each day.
The way you hold out your arms to each of us to pick you up because you want us to hold you.
The great big kisses you give and the way you snuggle into our faces so we can give you kisses, over and over and then you smile and giggle.

Happy Birthday to a little boy who is so precious to us.
Life would not be the same without your generous and happy nature to share it with.

I look forward to seeing what the year ahead bring to us with you and how you continue to grow.

All our love always ,

Happy Birthday Moran ♥

Dearest Moran,
At last it is your birthday and one you have been so patient waiting for.
This last year has truly been one of great change for you.
I have watched as you have developed and slowly become a far more reliant and helpful girl.
You have finally become a big girl now and this has been a big step for you.
I have seen how much you love to care for you littlest baby brother, with such compassion and devotion.
You have a heart for helping others and can always be relied on for playing with the younger children.

How I have watched your heart mature and grow. Learning and loving to learn all you can.
You are always open to new ideas and enjoy trying new things. How my heart loves to see you smile as you master another milestone that seemed so far for you. You are a determined girl and one who will keep going until you have completed what you set your heart upon. This is a wonderful gift you have.

Sweet and caring daughter I hope you enjoy your "Maypole Birthday" and I look forward to dancing and picnicking around the maypole with you.
Have a most blessed day, our precious and most special gift.
How we treasure you and all the 'specialness' you have brought into our lives

All our love ,

My Kindle and Me

For a confirmed 'bookaholic' I was very skeptical and I admit quite scathing about the whole Kindle or E-reader idea.
I mean who would want to read on a small electronic device when you can have a choice of the many beloved and often sought after, especially if they are out of print books by favourite authors which are on our many bookshelves.

There is nothing like picking up a cherished book, no a friend and opening up to the first page knowing what will be coming but still waiting to be captured by the print within the pages.
I love to see collections of favourite books on the shelves in our home all neatly lined up together. In my rare free times I enjoy walking along just gazing at the spines of the books knowing we have so much to offer our children in the depths of the many pages of these books.
I love being able to see the joy on our children's faces as we look for a book together as see some of the books we have read and start to reminisce about the time we read that one aloud together.
So it was a small, perhaps a large surprise to my family when I indicated that I thought I would like a Kindle.
What? How can that be? 'Why would you want a Kindle Mummy?'

A fine question and I would attempt to answer that here!
Well it all started when I was reading Wheat Belly on my computer and found that I really did not like reading a book on my computer as it tied me to one place. It really wasn't portable and frankly you can't take your computer to bed to read with you now can you?
However I was committed to reading this book on our new found journey and therefore persisted. I was at this stage investigating e-readers and talking to my friend Erin about it as she (being quicker on the uptake with technology) already had one.

As I was reading Wheat Belly I also was researching this way of eating and came across another book I was intrigued by Nourishing Traditions. Now although I had seen this I wasn't real interested in paying the price for a paperback AND having to wait for it to be delivered internationally. So I just waited.
As it turned out another friend told me you could download books for Kindle on to your computer and still be able to transfer them at a latter date to a Kindle.
Thus began the downloading on to my computer of books:  first off the Nourishing Traditions book (which I am keen to share) and then some others BUT still I was tired to the computer which I seriously don't like.

So in discussing this Autumn said she was interested too and wouldn't it be fun to get them together.........and we did.
We talked about how it would never replace reading the favourite books we own and that it would be, for me mainly a way to read those 'how to' books I love.
But it has become so much more than that!

I really love my Kindle! Yep! There it is!
I do love it. I love how I can have access to so many FREE classic books on it that I DON'T have to wait for. As soon as I 'buy' them they are instantly on the Kindle. Yes many of these classics are on our shelves but I still like to have them on the Kindle too, perhaps that is the bookaholic in me :)

I have even put other free books I have found on the Internet as well as free booklets on 'how to' etc on from my computer.
I love being able to get other free books too. I recently enjoyed a great fantasy series that I got for free and most of all I love getting access to the books immediately.

One of the best aspects of my Kindle is that I can take it with me when I run errands or have appointments. I don't have to worry about the book being bent or damaged while out and it slips easily into my backpack and I have many 'books' to choose from on the Kindle right at my fingertip
I know you all take along at least one book (or two) like me to have just in case you have a few minutes to spare and can read while you are out. In all honesty I usually take two in case I am not in the mood for the first one and I take along some hand work as well, knitting, embroidery etc, in case I don't want to read. After all a girl has to be prepared for anything doesn't she?
Come on now tell me you all  do this too? I am not alone out there and I?

So with all that is there anything I don't like?
Yes. I don't think the battery lasts as long as I thought it would.
For me and this is a purely personal one  I don't like how I can't just skip to the back few pages and see how the story ends ( I know lots of people don't read this way but I always have. I read the first few or more, find the main characters and then check to see if it is an ending I am happy with and then continue reading form the start).

I did think I would be able to buy books like All Year Round and other planning books and not have them spread all around me when planning Feast days etc, but I found that I can't get them on Kindle and even if I could I now know it would be difficult to 'flick' from one book to another easily.
So my planning books will still be 'hard copies' which I have decided I like better anyway. It is far more visual for me and that is how I plan best anyway.

So for me I am sure I will continue to buy books the old fashioned way and I will continue to buy books for my Kindle (and get free ones too).

I will live in the best of both worlds: both on paper and on screen.Life is Good!

Blessings to you and your homes,

Creative Inspiriation

Creativity and the pursuit of this is one part of our home life that I find most satisfying. Today was an excellent reminder of this and how we can all be inspired by those around us and therefore can help each other in this endeavor.

Autumn decided to get out her painting set and finish off a painting she had been doing for some time.
This in turn prompted my own desire to do some painting and as we have a couple of birthdays coming up I thought I would paint some birthday saints (or course I need to update this post now too)
Of course as soon as I got my paints out Rogan and Arwen wanted to paint too, so out came another set of paints and paper.
While we were doing this Vellvin had already been hand stitching in the room with us and continued on with her work.
Needless to say as soon as Myffwyn saw us all together painting she quickly got some textas AND paints along with her own special book she loves to work in.

So there we all were in the family room, sitting on the floor, in front of the fire (it was a very cold, dull and sort of rainy day here) and I was so thankful that we could do this activity together. Sharing our love of creating, even though we had no intentions of this to start with.
Living a life of home education, where we can follow those interests as we desire, not looking to meet any one else's standards or requirements but loving the satisfaction that comes form pursuing something just for the fun of it is a blessing I can't begin to describe. it opens the door to so many opportunities and what is more we can do this every day!

It just goes to show me time and again how if you fill your life with 'pure, loving and uplifting' activities that the people around will emulate these too.

Blessings to you and your homes,

"Liza Doolittle Day"

As a family we tend to like quite  a few old musicals and every time we watch My Fair Lady we keep saying we will have "Liza Doolittle Day" on the 20th of May as per the song

Just you Wait Henry Higgins -
Just you wait, 'enry 'iggins, just you wait!
You'll be sorry, but your tears'll be to late!
You'll be broke, and I'll have money;
Will I help you? Don't be funny!
Just you wait, 'enry 'iggins, just you wait!
Just you wait, 'enry 'iggins, till you're sick,
And you scream to fetch a doctor double-quick.
I'll be off a second later And go straight to the the-ater!
Oh ho ho, 'enry 'iggins, just you wait!
Ooooooh 'enry 'iggins!
Just you wait until we're swimmin' in the sea!
Ooooooh 'enry 'iggins!
And you get a cramp a little ways from me!
When you yell you're going to drown I'll get dressed
and go to town! Oh ho ho, 'enry 'iggins!
Oh ho ho, 'enry 'iggins! Just you wait!
One day I'll be famous! I'll be proper and prim;
Go to St. James so often I will call it St. Jim!
One evening the king will say:
"Oh, Liza, old thing,
I want all of England your praises to sing.
Next week on the twentieth of May
I proclaim Liza Doolittle Day!
All the people will celebrate the glory of you
And whatever you wish and want I gladly will do."
"Thanks a lot, King" says I, in a manner well-bred;
But all I want is 'enry 'iggins 'ead!"
"Done," says the King with a stroke.
"Guard, run and bring in the bloke!"
Then they'll march you, 'enry 'iggins to the wall;
And the King will tell me: "Liza, sound the call."
As they lift their rifles higher, I'll shout:
"Ready! Aim! Fire!"
Oh ho ho, 'enry 'iggins,
Down you'll go, 'enry 'iggins!
Just you wait!

So here are some ideas we brainstormed last night:
* decorate hats and have a most beautiful hat contest (reference - is the horse race)
* make a flower shop (our little ones love this) and sell flowers to all comers (reference -obviously the flower selling at the start)
* Have a flower arrangement competition or just beautiful decorations
* make and decorate paper fans (reference - Eliza's Chinese fan)
* play and rhyme with tongue twisters (reference- all the ones Eliza learns as part of her training to speak properly)
* play marbles (reference - the marbles in her mouth- do not try this one, just play marbles together)
* have a horse race:  for each 'horse and rider' you need - one who is the horse with rope around the middle and the 'rider' pulling the rope behind. ( reference- the horse race)
* eat lots and lots of CHOCOLATE ( reference- when she comes to ask for lessons)
* learn some of your favourite songs form the movie or even some of your favourite lines. Here is one by Eliza's father "with a little bit of luck"
* do a vowel in rounds song of your own design ( reference- when Eliza practices her vowels)
* make some raspberry tarts or plain cake (these being two mentioned in the movie)
* drink English Breakfast tea in pretty tea cups (reference - they often drink tea)
* have a tea party with special tea cups and special little cakes (perhaps as above)
* Watch the movie  obviously
* If you can't watch the whole movie look at some youtube clips of your favourite parts
Just you wait (youtube link)
With a little bit of Luck (youtube link)
The Rain in Spain (youtube link)
The Embassy Ball (youtube link)

So there you go. I hope you all enjoy your chance to have Eliza Dolittle Day

Blessings to you and your homes,

Children at church....

Some time ago I read an article about the distraction that little children are at Mass to others if they make a noise or cause others to lose concentration and therefore should be taken to the 'cry room' or that even parents should attend two different Mass' so as not to have children interfere with the reverence and quiet of others reflections during Holy Mass......
As this line of thinking is abhorrent me I felt I needed to respond to it.
Below is what I wrote with some more additions as I have had more time to think about this issue.

As a mother of 12 children from young adult to under 1 I find the whole debate about children at Mass irritating.
Children belong with parents and parents belong at Mass together, not separately but as a family. I have on only a handful of occasions taken one of our children out during Mass.
I refuse to take them out if our babies babble, or chat or smile at the granny behind us.
If the baby starts to cry I will breast feed that baby for comfort.
If the baby still won't settle I pass the child to my husband or to an older sibling. If the baby still does not settle I will walk to the side of the church, this is usually enough of a distraction and then I go back to our pew.

I rarely go outside and we have never attended a Church that had a cry room. If we had I would be a contentious objector ,because I believe we are at Mass, all of us together.
Just for your information I also object to children's liturgy as well for the same reason.
The family attends Mass together. It is important and as such receives due reverence.
We have always attended Mass in our Church clothes too. These are special and dressy and once again shows this is not an everyday event, this is special . We always sit in the front pew (or two) so the children can see what is happening. I believe this gives them a focus.

As for the controversial view of taking snacks and drinks,we never take food or drink as it is a distraction to everyone, children and parents alike. I also maintain that Mass is only 1 hour long, I don't think little ones will starve during this time, so it is purely a distraction tactic which I don't think is a long term good idea.
Having said that we do allow a special teddy if the child is attached or a small hand held 'friend' or a car for our boys. Sometimes we have allowed the little St Joseph books, but only one as this can lead to simply flicking from one book to another and thus can lead to unwanted 'wiggling'

Our middle boys are altar boys and we have had many comments on how their reverence helps the person concerned stay focused.
You may wonder where did this come from- them understanding that Mass is special, was it from being inside the church at Mass or from being able to go outside (or cry room) as soon as they made a noise. Children are very smart they will work that out pretty soon that if they make a noise  and noise is not appreciated that  you get to leave and go somewhere more fun.

Our children are I think pretty good at church, our younger ones are mostly too, and yes we have a few 'special needs' children, which makes it a challenge.
What is our protocol for dealing with ' the wiggles?'  Our focus has been to cuddle and separate any child or children who need a little extra care during Mass. Or I might point out what the priest is doing or point to the  statues or Mary and Jesus, something to bring their little minds  back to the reason we are here.

Finally, I believe because we had decided that we would have our children with us during church that we refused to let any of those stares or comments stop us from keeping our children with us during this most important time.

Of course  our children have learnt appropriate behaviour as they went along. We get frequent comments on our children's behaviour BUT that has taken work and has not been achieved over night.
In fact I am sure our younger ones emulate the older children's behaviour, who were the ones we actually had to train. This does not mean they are ALWAYS perfect. They do have off days as do we and so then we just go back to the basics that we have held on to all these years.

One thing we have never done is to let the children run around the church. They stay within the pew.
I remember a few parishes where we were given advice as younger parents about 'letting our children run around the church so they feel comfortable here'.
For us it never seemed the right choice, we are not at at playground, we are not at a social event this is church and it requires a different set of rules and standards.
Higher standards than we would for everyday events for this is not an everyday event ( well it can be but you know what I mean) it is special and we are honoured to be able to participate and should be thankful for the opportunity and act appropriately.

So apart from the special cuddle toy we don't allow them play things, colouring books etc, either - this is not entertainment this is Mass. Of course we have had slightly older children get to the stage that says 'this is boring' and we tell them 'this is special and you are not here to be entertained.'
Do they get it? Well I think so, they certainly 'get' the fact that this is our standard and we are not negotiating.
I once knew a family that allowed their daughter to take her knitting to church because she was bored!
What does this tell the child? That it isn't important and you can just be here without 'being here at all.'
Not really what I think attending mass is all about.
For heavens sake it is such a small amount of time really.
Do remember though that little children don't always have a clear idea of time and so can't work out how much longer mass will take, our 6 year old still asks how many more songs before we finish. This gives him a focus and something to work too, but he knows the routine and respects it too.

I also compare this time and the expectations to what you would expect your child to do at school. Would you allow your child to run around and eat and drink while a teacher was trying to teach them?
No you would expect them to pay attention for that amount of time!
'So why not expect the same amount of attention for the most important part of our child's education - their faith.

So I would just say to any new parents DO NOT be intimidated by those who would ask you to leave. Stand up for you and your child's rights. Attend as a FAMILY. None of this going to separate Mass' to keep the little ones under control, so others don't get distracted.
Be gentle but firm in your response to children and babies behaviour but remember they are children and not perfect, oops neither are we.
However, give your children the gift of Mass as a special event in their lives that we attend as a family because God gave us families to learn and grow in and that is our responsibility as Godly parents.

As an aside- from personal experience I would like to say that I am more distracted by those teens and adults (who actually come) who are dressed immodestly and those who show little respect in the way they take Communion.
Not to mention all the people who chat before and after mass.
We have also been very distracted after confession as we are praying, that people show so little respect for those preparing for Mass and chat so liberally and loudly.
Should not this be a bigger distraction than children who are still learning the importance and specialness of attending Mass, with their parents as guides and role models.

Patience, humbleness and gentleness is what is needed for our children as they come to know and love the beauty of this Sacrament.

And for all those who pass judgement on families with young children at Mass I would like to ask them 'where are their own children and grandchildren?'
Because they are not at Mass either. Perhaps they thought they would be better off not coming because they never understood the significance of Mass and felt as if they were a burden or not worthy of teaching the significance of  proper behaviour and so just shunted off to the cry-room or outside where they would not bother those more holy then they.

Please welcome the little children as Jesus would. Help them and train them with love, respect, patience  and gentleness so they too can know the wonder of Holy Mass.

Blessings to you and your homes,

Our Ascension Day Plans and Idea from past years

Ascension Day commemorates the ascension of Christ into Heaven it occurs on the Thursday 40 days after Easter.
According to the accounts in the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus appeared to many of his disciples during the 40 days following his resurrection. On the 40th day, he came again to the Apostles and led them out to the Mount of Olives where he instructed them to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Holy Spirit. Then, as they were watching, he ascended into clouds. As they continued to watch, two angels appeared and declared to them that, just as he ascended, Jesus would return in glory.

As Ascension Day is tomorrow and I am not sure if I will come up with any new plans for the children to celebrate with, I thought I would share our precious plans and activities for anyone to perhaps get ideas for this day.
Here is my list:
Ascension Day 2011
Plans and Scenes 2011
Ascension Day 2010
Ascension Day Plans 2009 (my original ones)

For those who would like to pray a Novena between Ascension and Pentecost:
Holy Spirit Novena~

Dearest Holy Spirit, confiding in Your deep, personal love for me, I am making this novena for the following request, if it be Your Holy Will to grant it:
(mention your request).
Teach me, Divine Spirit, to know and seek my last end; grant me the holy fear of God; grant me true contrition and patience.
Do not let me fall into sin. Give me an increase of faith, hope and charity, and bring forth in my soul all the virtues proper to my state in life.
Make me a faithful disciple of Jesus and an obedient child of the Church. Give me efficacious grace sufficient to keep the Commandments and to receive the Sacraments worthily.
Give me the four Cardinal Virtues, Your Seven Gifts, Your Twelve Fruits.
Raise me to perfection in the state of life to which You have called me and lead me through a happy death to everlasting life.
I ask this through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

Blessings to you and your homes,
