The Inn of the Sixth Happiness

Quite a while ago while on a shopping spree I was looking for DVDs for our children and was browsing because there seemed to be a lot of our favourites on sale.
I was really happy to find The Inn of The Sixth Happiness after hearing about it from a friend. This is based on the book The Small Woman which is itself based on the life of Gladys Aylward  a missionary to China.

Well it stayed in our cupboard unopened even until last week when we were in our Quarantine status.

While most of the family were in a state of sleep and recovery I asked Autumn if she would like to watch it with me as no one before had seemed that interested. I can always rely on Autumn to watch interesting things with me.

I was really impressed with the movie and was really pleased we had spent the time together watching it. As some of our other family members recovered a bit they too came and watched the remaining parts of the movie.

Now as I was thinking a bout the movie I was pretty sure we had a book about Gladys Aylwood and after scouring our shelves I found the copy we own.
Never Say Die. The Story of Gladys Aylwood

Now mostly I really like these younger reader books about missionaries. We have quite a few in this series but honestly after reading it, I found it rather dry and abbreviated.
I believe if you would like to share the story of Gladys Aylwood with your children the DVD gives a much more thorough and interesting story than the above book.

Having said that I do not know how it compares with the original Small Woman book as we do not own it. I will be investigating it though when we can get it from the library.

As a bit of a teaser if you haven't seen The Inn of The Sixth Happiness here is an old trailer I found on line for you to enjoy.

Blessings to you and your homes,

This is a great movie. Very moving! I watched it with my 5/6 grade class when we did a unit on China. They liked it as well.

This is a family favorite of ours!

Congratulations on your pregnancy... I tend to be a lurker and comment here and there (except for poor Nadja, who must get terribly tired of hearing from me!)... but I did see that you were expecting, and I am so happy for you. You are in my prayers.

God bless!

Glady's really struck the boys when we read about her while studying China. I think we read her story in a gathering of missionary stories we have. I think what struck the boys as the most amazing thing was how she hid in the kiln, when they knew to be an oven. So they went around for days saying she saved children by hiding in the oven! ;)

Hope you are doing well; praying for your pregnancy.

God bless,

Hello Gae, I think this is a good family film. I bought the DVD a couple of months ago very cheaply from Kmart. It brings back memories of watching the movie when I was a young girl. When I was homeschooling our boys I had them read The Small Woman, which they enjoyed very much. Inspiring story. And Ingrid Bergman is always lovely on the screen. I like her in this and The Bells of St Mary's. blessings..Trish
