Do you have a Mary Poppins at your House?

Do you have a Mary Poppins in your home?

Well we don't have a Mary Poppins living here but we regularly get visits from someone remarkably like her.
It has been some many months since Bernadette came into our lives, initially through Moran's referral to Disability Services.
Bernadette was the person assigned to Moran. Since then Bernadette has changed jobs and Moran no longer needs someone from this service.
I am amazed to see how God can work through situations. If Moran had not been referred then we never would have met Bernadette.

Since then Bernadette has become a true friend to our family and our children have been blessed by the  'Aunty' she is like to them.

How does this make her a Mary Poppins?

Well, whenever Bernadette has visited she has often brought little things for the children, not all the time and not for everyone. Sometimes they are specifically for Moran's sensory issues other just fun things like colouring books etc. Other times she loans us DVDs or books the children will enjoy.

Because she always carried a large shopping bag with these items in the children referred to the bag as her Mary Poppins bag and how she was like Mary Poppins, able to produce magical things from her bag.

Now our Autumn was very impressed with this and said that  Bernadette should have a carpet bag., she had some ideas of making one for her.
Now obviously Bernadette thought this was a fun idea too as when we went to Spotlight together one day she bought the makings for the Carpet bag.
Just last week she finished the bag and has a tutorial on how she made it.
Now all we need to do is make the hat for her ☺
So on Monday when Bernadette came for our outing she brought along her carpet bag for the first time. Our children were so impressed that she had it with and and delighted in the "Mary Poppins' of it.

Of course she had some goodies in it: some play doh and bubble mix for the children and some Star Wars figures for them to have a play with, before  she took them home with her.
Bernadette made the play doh from these recipes at the Sensory Processing Disorder Resource Center, now there is a wealth of information for anyone who may need some help or ideas.
Of course we have our Mary Poppins, I mean Bernadette to continue to help us.
The children enjoyed playing with the play doh today and made a lot of interesting creations, post photos of course.
I have in the past used this recipe for my play doh:
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 2 cups water
  • food colouring
  • peppermint essence
Method:
  1. Mix all ingredients in a pot, and stir well.
  2. Cook over medium heat 3-4 minutes stirring constantly until it begins to form a ball and becomes stiff.
  3. Store in airtight containers in refrigerator.
Arwen was so cute she would take little bits of the blue and push them into the little pile of pink she had.

So that is our story of how Mary Poppins came into our lives and like the children who she visits, we are astounded and blessed by her inventiveness and care.

Blessings to you and your homes,

What a great story - my niece who will be 5 on Christmas day is in love with Mary Poppins.

I also wanted to say thank you for posting that link to the Sensory Processing Disorder website. I've never heard of it before but I'm going to share this with my sister-in-law as I could answer yes to like 6 of these symptoms in regard to my nephew.

My brother has a son who is autistic and I often wondered if my husband sister's son was mildly autistic when he was younger. As time went on I started to doubt that but after reading your post I'm now wondering about the sensory issue.

Again thanks

Sandy
