Star Wars Week

When our older children started to talk about a trip away in October the other children were making plans on how to use their time. Of course they said they would not be doing standard 'school work' while the others were away.

The idea of a Star Wars week was very quick to come to the fore and the children have been planning this for soooooooo long.

I was asked what we would be doing for Star Wars week and these are the plans we came up with:
One of the major things they wanted to do was to watch ALL of the movies:
The Star Wars Saga ~Prequel Trilogy and Star Wars Trilogy
Also Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the  TV Series

Books to read or look at are:
Star Wars: The Complete visual Dictionary
The Ultimate Visual Guide to Star Wars
Star Wars Vault

This is a site for some quite hard trivia questions
The children will also play the games we own below:
Computer game-- NOT my favourite in the least
Monopoly is a huge favourite and is also good for the little ones
Guess who is a favourite and the Star wars edition is quite good for littlies too.
All our children love Trivial Pursuit and this one has the DVDs for added entertainment.
A good friend recently gave the children a snap as well as a fish version of these cards. I played with the little ones

Other ideas we brainstormed are these:
* Wear your Star Wars cloaks for the week (pretty much a given)
* Do a narration and illustration of the major characters in ALL the DVDs
* Make a starfighter
* Create a new character with the relevant information and role in a movie
* Make a map of the Star Wars Galaxy
* Make A Jango Fett  or Clone helmet
* Make an alphabet book: draw/ print one picture for each letter of the alphabet
* Star Wars Alphabet (below) - use to send coded messages to each other.
* Draw some of the ships/ droids and how they work etc.
* Make some paper dolls of your favourite male and female character
* Research the Making of Star Wars
* Research the progress of the visual effects over time.
* Research the merchandise and the collector value of different pieces
* Make some fun facts pages : perhaps using  some of these questions
* Edit a photo of yourself to hold a Lightsaber

Star Wars Day

The children were very keen to have a Star Wars Day on May 19th as it is 5 years since episode 3 was released.
WE had missed International Star Wars day on the 4th.

We made some plans for the day that included Dressing up, food and making light sabers (even though we have made them before and still have them) as well as some puzzles and colouring pages.

Because they love Star Wars so much that our children have started a Star Wars blog A Galaxy Far Far Away. They are just starting it and adding things as they go and time permits.

Here are the plans we had worked out for the day:
1. Dress up as a character form the Movie Series.
2. Watch a Star Wars movie
3, Play Star Wars Trivial Pursuit
4. Play tar Wars Monopoly and the mini Trivia game
5. Make light sabers from scratch
6. Have Light saber duels

More 'schooly ' ideas to do:
1. Make a Star Wars flag
2. Make a word search
3. Make a Star Wars Character quiz cards using books we have
4. Colour in pictures
5. Draw your favourite character
6. Write out a mission for the Jedi's to to
a) in flowery Star Wars language using Star Wars terminology etc.
b) and in understandable everyday language

Food:
*Blue Fizzy drink --to represent Jawa Juice in Attack of the Clones
* Heinz fruit sticks -- to represent Death Sticks in in Attack of the Clones
* SAO biscuits -- to represent space survival food Luke has in The Empire Strikes Back
* Rice-- to represent food from Tatooine
* Fruit--the fruit from The Lake District on Naboo in Attack of the Clones
* Chocolate cakes with pictures form the old and new trilogy.

This is a post I did last year when the children were making Star Wars lightsaber handles in more detatil.
Saxon as Obi-Wan
Vellvin as Anakin
Eden as Padme
Rogan as Count Dooku
Corbyn as Darth Maul
Moran as Ventress
Myffwyn as Luminara Unduli
Corbyn as Darth Maul
Corbyn and Moran's masks were made from paper plates.
Corbyn chiseling back his light saber
The children made light saber's from Tea-tree Tree's
Eden using the vice and sanding her light saber.
Everyone working on the light saber's
A light saber duel
"Jawa Juice"
"Death Sticks"
Fruit as "Fruit"
"Space Survival food"
Umm, I cheated and bought Woolie's mud cakes and cut out pictures form the Internet. Yea, pretty slack I know, but I had had a long day.
Another version of light saber's. This time one of our broom handles.
Painting the light sabers (all were painted even the Tea-tree ones) in Jedi and Sith colours for each person.
The children had a very good and fun day, well two days as we didn't cover all in one day.

May the Force be with you!!

Blessings,

Star Wars Mania

For some unknown reason we are going through the "Star Wars" mania again. We seem to go through this stage every year. Each time it happens the children make things to be Jedis. About 2 years ago Saxon wanted a Jedi cloak for his birthday. I bought the fabric at the nearest Spotlight about 1 hours drive away and started making the cloak along with some other items the night before his birthday. Of course this was the night my sewing machine would not work and so there was no cloak for his birthday the next day.

However Mama(Grandmother) was coming to stay a couple of days later and was able to get the sewing machine to go. I have since acquired a new sewing machine but the old one would still work for Mama. Saxon's cloak was very popular and all the other children wanted one. Since Mama was still here she made 5 other cloaks as well from the pattern we created ourselves.

The children have used these cloaks constantly and some have been passed down to younger ones and now Saxon needs a new one again. As they have watched the movies this time they have each worn their cloaks and been the character they have chosen and carried their lightsaber handles they have made.
During this time of Star Wars mania the children have made lightsaber handles out of a wooden broom handle. They found an old broom handle and cut it into various lengths, depending on which lightsaber each child had chosen. Each one was then marked with the same markings as the character's lightsaber. To achieve this they cut notches, lines and added switches of wood and or buttons for the buttons. They were then painted with acrylic paint and the end was painted the colour of the "light" the lightsaber was.

We have since decided if we could get very long Glow sticks and drilled a hole in the end of the handle we could glue in the glow stick and the lightsaber would glow like in the movies. They plan on trying this one night soon.

The photos of the children in cloaks are 2 years old.We don't have a current photo similar to this one as yet.
